Red Cross plan to double shop profits

The British Red Cross has announced a £12m revamp of its retail arm in a bid to double the annual profits from its shops to £8m a year.

By 2012, the charity will have opened more than 100 new charity shops, refitted 140 existing ones and closed 70 of its least profitable stores. It will also introduce electronic web-based tills in all stores, adopt a new incentive-based salary structure for shop managers and increase its efforts to recruit...
